Reflection

After my first semester, I wasn’t sure if I was ready for this writing composition class. Because initially I wasn’t good at writing. I knew what to write but wasn’t sure how to address it. 

Now by looking at my writing strategy, I can tell I have made so much improvement in my writing. I have never done any scientific report, scientific controversy, and field study. In the scientific report, I was able to analyze the strategies that the author uses to achieve his purpose. An action or step I took in order to achieve this particular goal was, first I tried to comprehend what writing strategy the author used. And what was the purpose of his report? who is the audience, to whom the author delivers the message, and what is his stance? Once I figured out various aspects of this report, it became a lot more accessible to analyze a scientific report. 

For scientific controversy paper, there was some aspect in order to achieve the goal. For this assignment, I had to do powerful research. Once I had my bibliography ready It became more permissive to choose my stance. Because by that time I had information from both perspectives of my topic. Therefore, as it is a controversial topic, I had sufficient information to rebuttal my counterclaim. But what helped me the most was in my bibliography, I summarized each article. As a result, when I needed information, I looked in my bibliography and I found an accurate article to support my claim. This process was much more effective for this assignment. One more assignment that I did in this course which I never have done before, was field study. In this field study, I have observed a particular object. And required to analyze what I have observed over time and a goal I have wished to accomplish by the observation I made. What process helped the most for this field study was the handwritten notes that I took. These handwritten notes remind me of the major point that I observed each day. And when I wrote my paper I looked at my notes. As a result, I didn’t miss any important information to include in my essay. All these assignments, especially scientific report, scientific controversy paper, and field study have contributed to my writing growth most. 

My writing process coming into this class wasn’t much organized compared to now. When I started this course I knew how to write a text analysis but not Scientific Rhetorical Analysis. I knew how to write an argumentative essay but not a scientific controversy paper. However, every wiring peace of composition has evolved into my writing process. Every peace taught me something new. Those writing pieces taught me how to find the author’s purpose, audience, and stance. Which is an important thing for a scientific paper. Now I have learned how to write text analysis and Scientific Rhetorical Analysis, argumentative essays, and scientific controversy paper. 

My scientific writing knowledge has applied to my other class. In my psychology class, I had to write a midterm and a final paper. By looking at my midterm and final grade I feel like I had made the right decision by taking this course. I have learned a lot from this class in order to write something about science. Not only inside the classroom, but I can also use that knowledge outside of my classroom by reading any scientific article and figure out the author’s purpose, audience, stance, and etc.

Lastly, I want to thank my instructor. Thank you, Ms. S, for making the learning fun and for letting us take a pause when we needed to. I’m so grateful to have you as my professor.
